Men’s Skincare Regimen: What’s That?

Men have similar skin-related problems as women do. This includes acne, hyperpigmentation, dark circles and signs of premature aging. It is therefore important for men to follow a proper skincare routine to get rid of these issues.

Though both men and women have similar skin, there are differences as well. Men have thicker, oily skin and denser hair growth while women generally have thinner and  drier skin.

Now let us look at how a beginner's skincare regime would look like for men.

Beginner’s Guide To Skincare

Use a cleanser

Start your day with applying a cleanser to wash off all the dirt, sweat and impurities stuck on the face, and also any products applied the previous night. Choose a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser to avoid any allergies or rashes. Do the same procedure in the evening before going to bed. Cleansing is the first step in any skincare routine that opens up clogged pores and gives a fresh look.

Exfoliate at least once a week

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells and giving place for new cells to regenerate. Why do we need to do this? It is to stop the building up of dead cells on the skin, which leads to dark circles and pigmentation. Start with exfoliating once a week and a maximum of two times a week. Exfoliating prevents aging by increasing collagen production and stimulating circulation around the face. Don’t forget to follow it up with a moisturizer as exfoliating can dry up the skin.

Moisturizing is a must

No matter what your skin type is, you need a moisturizer in your skincare regimen. Make sure to moisturize twice a day for best results. Moisturizers help the cracks in your skin barrier and give a smooth, soft complexion. It also protects your skin from external damage and keeps the makeup products on your face intact.

Follow up with sunscreen

Next time you step out of your house, don’t forget to apply your sunscreen. Use a SPF that is more than 30 for complete sun protection against the harsh UV rays. This will protect your skin from getting acne-related problems, tanning and pigmentation.

Now, if you are already following the beginner’s routine, and want to upgrade your regimen, this one's for you.

Intermediate Regimen For Men

Hydrating serum

Skincare routine for men is incomplete without hydrating serums. Serums restore your natural skin barrier and fight against stubborn skin-related issues by tapping the root problems. While there are many serums in the market, hydrating serums are the safe option. Hyaluronic acid is the main ingredient, which seeps into the skin and actively pulls up the moisture. You can apply serum after cleansing and before moisturizing.

Face masks

Face masks are a nice way to freshen up dull-looking and tired skin after a long day. There are mainly two types of face masks— deep cleansing and deep nourishing. Deep cleansing face masks are typically made up of clay or charcoal which absorbs excess sebum on the face from the pores. This can be used by people having oily or combination skin. For the dry skin folks, deep nourishing masks are better alternatives, as they nourish and revive dull-looking skin to give a hydrated, plump finish.

Toners

Toners are life saviors for people with oily skin (not for everybody). For those with a complicated skincare routine, apply toners to balance the skin’s pH levels and avoid any irritation. Apply gentle toners after cleansing, and before using other chemical exfoliants or serums. Follow it up with a moisturizer.

For those of you who want to upgrade your skincare regimen to tackle serious skin-related issues, add these powerful ingredients to your routine.

Advanced Regimen: Ingredient-focused

Retinol and Bakuchiol

Retinol is created from Vitamin A compounds, which are responsible for the pigments in the retina of the eye — hence the name. It is the best product to reverse signs of aging and acne scars. Bakuchiol  is a milder alternative for more sensitive skin, which does the same job as retinol. Start with a low percentage and gradually increase. Also, do a patch test before using these products to avoid any allergic reactions.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an essential ingredient in many skincare products. It boosts skin brightness and reduces hyperpigmentation and discoloration. You can even add foods rich in Vitamin C to your diet. They are mainly found in citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges and even avocados.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a common ingredient in many moisturizers. It gives a smooth, soft look while being gentle on the skin. It is best for sensitive skin as it does not clog the pores when applied on the skin.

There are other ingredients that you can add to your skincare routine such as ceramides and collagen, ferulic acid, alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids. Remember not to use more than two products at a time, and always follow it up with a moisturizer to keep the natural moisture intact.

While selecting your skincare products, you can go for organic alternatives free of sulfate, parabens and other toxic chemicals, to give the best skin, minus the side effects.
